What is this topic about?
In Key Topic 1 you will look at Germany as it tries to rebuild after the First World War. It starts in 1918 with the Kaiser stepping down and a new Weimar government taking over. We learn why this new system had strengths and weaknesses, and how the Treaty of Versailles caused anger across the country. We then explore the myths about the betrayal of Germany that grew at the time, the threats from Left and Right, and the crisis caused by hyperinflation. The topic then moves to the calmer years after 1924, when Stresemann helped Germany recover and gain respect abroad. These years also brought social change, with new roles for women, better living standards, and bold new ideas in culture.
Do I need to know anything before we start?
No earlier learning is needed, although you may have studied World War 1 at Key Stage 3.
